Frequently Asked Questions

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process where an independent and impartial mediator helps two or more parties in conflict have a structured conversation. The goal is to find a mutually acceptable solution, improve communication, and prevent further disputes. It’s not about assigning blame it’s about working toward practical, future-focused outcomes.

How is online mediation different from in-person mediation?

Online mediation follows the same structured, impartial process as face-to-face sessions, but it’s conducted via secure video conferencing. This format gives you flexibility to join from almost anywhere, avoid travel time, and still have the same level of confidentiality and professionalism as you would in person. For some people, the online setting also makes it easier to have open, productive conversations.

What’s the difference between traditional and shuttle mediation?

  • Traditional mediation — All parties are in the same virtual room, taking turns to speak with the mediator facilitating the discussion.

  • Shuttle mediation — Parties remain in separate virtual rooms, and the mediator moves between them, relaying information and proposals.

We can recommend the most suitable style after discussing your circumstances.

Where does mediation take place?

All mediations are conducted online via secure video conferencing, making it accessible anywhere in Australia. This format:

  • Saves time and travel costs

  • Allows participants to join from separate locations

  • Creates a more neutral and less intimidating environment

  • Works well for both traditional and shuttle mediation styles

Who can request mediation?

Anyone involved in a conflict can request mediation , this includes individuals, teams, and organisations.

  • Contractors, consultants, or freelancers in dispute with clients or project teams

Our services do not cover family mediation . We focus solely on workplace, organisational, and community-based matters.

What happens before the mediation session?

Before any joint discussion takes place, each participant has a private intake session with the mediator. This is done online or over the phone and gives you a chance to:

  • Understand how the process works

  • Share your perspective and concerns in a confidential space

  • Clarify what you want to achieve

  • Ask any questions

  • Identify any practical needs (e.g., breaks, support person)

  • This about solutions/outcomes you are comfortable with

  • Sign the Agreement to Mediate form

This step ensures everyone is prepared, comfortable, and ready for a constructive conversation.

How long does mediation take?

It depends on the complexity of the issues, but most mediations are booked as half-day (up to 3 hours) or full-day (8 hours - for complex matters and longer bookings). Some matters can be resolved more quickly, while others may require multiple sessions. Your mediator will recommend the most appropriate length after your intake call.

Is mediation confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in mediation is confidential. Unless disclosure is required by law (e.g., safety concerns). This confidentiality is designed to help everyone speak openly without fear of their words being used against them later.

Do I need a lawyer present?

No. Our workplace mediations are designed to be straightforward and accessible without the need for legal representation. The process is guided by a neutral mediator who ensures both parties have the opportunity to be heard and work toward a resolution. While you may seek independent legal advice outside of the session if you wish, lawyers do not attend or participate in our mediations unless discussed prior to booking.

What if we can’t reach an agreement?

Mediation is voluntary and outcome-focused, but agreement is not guaranteed. If a full resolution isn’t reached, you may still achieve:

  • Partial agreements

  • Improved communication

  • Clarified issues for future discussion or negotiation

The mediator can also prepare a mediation agreement of what was discussed, which can be used as a reference for next steps.

How much does mediation cost?

Fees vary depending on the session length and type of mediation (traditional or shuttle). Our pricing is transparent and agreed upon before mediation begins. You can view our current rates and book online via Book Now or services page.
